The countdown from Steelers to the kick -off is here – and we are 75 days until Pittsburgh is opposite the New York Jets in the Metlife Stadium. In the spirit of counting down we look at the history of No. 75 and the players who wore the best.
Current Steelers No. 75 Carrier: NVT
There is no current carrier of No. 75 on the Steelers schedule – and for a good reason. The sweater was officially retired in 2014, out of respect for demonstrably the biggest defender in the history of Pittsburgh.
Last five stalkers to wear no. 75:
- Joe Greene, 1969–1981
- Ken Kortas, 1965–1968
- Joe Krupa, 1956–1964
- Nick Bolkovac, 1953–1954
- Dick Fugler, 1952
Best No. 75 in Steelers History: DT Joe Greene
There is no debate that this sweater number – ‘mean’ Joe Greene was the largest steeler ever no. 75 Don. Greene, who played with the Steelers from 1969 to 1981, is generally considered the cornerstone of the Steel Curtain defense -considered one of the largest defense units in the NFL history, which led Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl titles. Although Sacks only became an official statistics in 1982, Greene’s unofficial 77.5 bags would have been arranged by a Steeler of all time as fourth place, behind James Harrison, Cam Heyward and TJ Watt. He is the only stalker who has won the defensive player of the year twice and he has been called all-pro eight times. Greene is not only one of the greatest stalkers of all time – his impact changed the Steel City brand of sport forever.
